Studies on The Classification and Distribution of Salientia of Korea

Abstract
1. During the past three years (1968-70),the author collected 1,883 specimens which represents all the known species,4 genera, and 9 species except Kaloula borealis.
2. The length of the hind limb is positively correlated with jumping capacity. The following list shows the quotients of the hind limb divided by that of the body:
(1) Rana amurensis coreana 1.9
(2) Rana ornativentris 1.9
(3) Rana dybowskii 1.9
(4) Rana nigromaculata 1.8
(5) Rana plancyi chosenica 1.7
(6) Rana rugosa 1.7
(7) Hyla arborea japonica 1.7
(8) Bufo bufo gargarizans 1.4
(9) Bombina orientalis 1.4
(10) Kaloula borealis 1.3
3. Two ectoparasites are found on Rana dybowskii:
(1) Hemiclepsis maginata Muller
(2) Oligobdella orientalis Oka
The former is cosmopolitan and the latter has not been recorded previously in Korea.
4. One female of Rana dybowskii lavs 443 eggs.
Development in the laboratory was as follows:
Egg period 1 week
Hind limb 6 weeks from hatching
Fore limb 8 weeks from hatching
Metamorphosis 10 weeks from hatching
Tadpoles were fed with lettuce leaves.
5. Rana amurensis coreana were abundant on the border banks of the rice paddies in Sosa,Kyonggi-Do and seven specimens were collected in the back yards of Dabo Hotel in Kyongju, and 27 specimens were collected in the ditches between the upland fields in Yangsan.
6. Egg-laying of Bombina orientalis was observed from May 3 to July 23,1970.
7. Rana nigromaculata and Rana dybowskii are edible in Korea.Importing of Rana catesbeiana from the United States and Rana esculenta from Europe for raising will make a good frog industry.
